Marathon Patent Group Inc’s patent suit against Texas Instruments Incorporated was the subject of successful mediation session Tuesday, according to a court filing. The litigation is part of a raft of related suits brought in November 2013 by Marathon’s Vantage Point Technology Inc. unit against a host of major companies alleging infringement of a computer access memory patent.

Patent licenser wins court round against NYT, others

The New York Times Co, J.C. Penney Corp and CBS Corp lost a round Tuesday in a patent fight with Helferich Patent Licensing, LLC, which had accused them of infringing on patents for looking at websites on mobile telephones. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturned a lower court decision which had said that because the mobile phone makers had licensed the patents there was no need for content providers to do so.

Frontline IT companies have seen a 10-fold increase in the number of patent applications made over the last five years, an indication of the growing push towards automation and higher margin offerings. Data from industry body Nasscom show that Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and others have filed for about 1,500 patents in fiscal 2014 against 150 in 2009.
